The Rebirth of Marquis Huan

Among Three Kingdoms time-travel fiction, The Rebirth of Marquis Huan is one of the earlier and more representative works, and its entry point is rather interesting: rather than having the protagonist "replace" Zhang Fei, it merges a modern consciousness with Zhang Fei's original one, so this Zhang Yide keeps his fierce, loyal, and courageous core while gaining an added clarity from a later age. Choosing Zhang Fei as the protagonist already sidesteps the common "support Cao" or "aid Liu" formulas of Three Kingdoms time-travel fiction, and instead confronts the most lamentable end among the Five Tiger Generals—the two characters "Huan Hou" are both a posthumous title and the keynote the author sets for the whole book. During its Qidian serialization, author Zhi Yu Zhi Le accumulated a large readership, and the book is complete at over 2.3 million characters; its completed status is quite friendly to readers who like to read straight through. It should be noted that this is an early web historical novel, and its pacing and depth of historical research bear the marks of that period; readers who want fast-paced power fantasy or strict historical accuracy should adjust their expectations. As a long work that "rewrites Zhang Fei's fate," it is better suited to being a Three Kingdoms imagination of loyalty and brotherhood that one can slowly immerse oneself in.
