The Herbalist King is a historical time-travel novel by web author Mu Yi, serialized on Qidian from July to November 2012, totaling about 820,000 characters across 260 chapters. At the outset, the protagonist Ye Zhiqiu is a doctoral student who has spent seven years in a combined master's and doctoral program in traditional Chinese medicine. Having read extensively in medical classics and performed excellently on written exams, he is nervously awaiting his doctoral interview. At this time, Imperial Physician Sun Yonghe faces impeachment after a series of princes die young, and the family teeters on the brink of ruin. Facing skepticism from the physicians of the Hanlin Medical Institute and mounting pressure from political enemies, Ye Zhiqiu, with his painstaking scholarly attitude of "clear in mind but hard to express by touch," gradually transforms book knowledge into clinical practice: the passages of the Neijing and Shanghan Lun, the distinction between warm disease and cold damage, formula compatibility and herbal verification—these become his weapons time and again. The book follows the growth of medical skill as its main thread, with a lighter emphasis on criminal cases, interweaving imperial examinations, physicians' contests, palace medical cases, and street-side consultations, portraying a character who moves from the study to the clinic—from a "medical bookworm" to a renowned physician.
