Summary

Besting is a science fiction romance novel by Zhang Yanhua, published by New Star Press in January 2017. The story opens with a bizarre incident set against the backdrop of the Syrian war—the "resurrection" at the Temple of Zenobia—and follows Police Officer Philip's investigation as it gradually uncovers the identity of a mysterious figure named Besting. Besting comes from the distant planet Siris, an "artificial human" with a manufactured body and a dual life system combining animal and plant characteristics. Upon arriving on Earth, he meets Nanka, a princess of an ancient glacier kingdom, and falls into a love affair between an "artificial human" and a "natural human." Yet his origins are shrouded in layer upon layer of mystery, and the power struggles among his adoptive father, godfather, and closest friend send his fate into sharp reversals; he must protect his bond with Nanka amid grave danger. More than three centuries later, Besting returns to Earth with Nanka's remains, hoping to bury her in the ancient glacier kingdom of Punogangri as he remembers it, but he cannot find it anywhere. In a small inn in Zanda County, Tibet, he meets the narrator "I" (Hugo) over a copy of the Tao Te Ching, and a complex, subtle emotional entanglement develops between them. The novel employs dual narrative threads, shuttling between glaciers, ancient kingdoms, interstellar conspiracies, and present-day suspense, and draws on concepts such as "DNA-optimized humans" and "planetary eggs" to offer bold speculations about human origins, genetic engineering, and future civilizations.

Editor's review

Reading tips
