Summary

Ming is a long-form alternate-history novel by the web novelist Jiutu (real name Meng Hu). Serialization began on Qidian in November 2003; the complete work runs to roughly 1.3 million Chinese characters and is regarded as one of the founding works of the "Ming time-travel" genre. The protagonist, Wu Anguo, is a dual-master's graduate in engineering at a Beijing university who, during a mountain hike, accidentally falls into another time—the early Ming dynasty. Disoriented, he chooses a thorny path guided by his knowledge and conscience: beginning with improving local livelihoods and reforming farm tools and armaments, he assists Prince Yan, Zhu Di, in guarding the northern frontier and securing Liaodong, then navigates Zhu Yuanzhang's suspicions and court intrigue to promote novelties such as a customs office and an academy of sciences, seeking to pry open the institutional foundations of an entire era with technology, a sense of rights, and egalitarian ideas. The novel does not depict a superhuman hero conquering the realm, nor a harem romance; instead it places a modern person's bewilderment and reflection inside the real political structure of the early Ming, repeatedly asking: if a modern individual can oppose an immense old order only with his own strength, how much can he actually change? The book is divided into two volumes, "Setting Sail" and "Great Wind," and the story advances through multiple tensions—personal ideals versus national interest, reform versus conservatism, loyalty versus self-preservation. The ending remains ambiguous, left for readers to judge.

Editor's review

FAQ
