Summary

In Luoyan City in the southern borderlands of the Eastern Tang Empire, Li Feng, son of the third master of the Li Family Manor, has been frail since childhood but is iron-willed, determined to break through the bottleneck of the ninth level of body refining. Twenty years earlier, the three Li brothers had settled here with their craft, established themselves by forging fine weapons, and risen to become the city's foremost family—yet they never speak of where they came from. By chance Li Feng learns a fragmentary "Nameless Mystic Art," and from then on embarks on the path of cultivation, gradually drawn into old grievances tied to the long-declined "Eight Gates." The so-called Eight Gates are said to hold Eight Secrets, and those who master the Eight Secrets are supposed to uphold justice and defend the righteous path; but Li Feng takes another road. He does not intend to be the good man the world praises. Gambling, treasure hunting, tomb raiding, plundering—he does it all, holding fast only to the scale in his own heart. The novel follows Li Feng's growth and "evildoing" as its bright thread, and the recovery of the lost Eight Secrets and the scattered Eight Great Totems as its hidden thread, unfurling a bewildering grand mystery: who is placing the pieces, and who is merely a piece on the board? This is a long Eastern fantasy work by the web author Fengchao Yongdong. It is complete, exceeding four million words, a typical long-form leveling-up wish-fulfillment novel with elements of mystery, exploration, and ensemble adventure. The protagonist is no traditional righteous hero but a morally gray figure forever negotiating between his "notorious name" and his "true heart"—which is also the book's most talked-about draw.

Editor's review

Who it's for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
