Summary

This is a Beijing-flavored novel built from the slang and rules of the culinary trade. The author Chang Xiaohu has no interest in cooking itself; what interests him is the craftsman's heart. He ate and gossiped with old chefs, setting down details like force-feeding ducks, hanging them in the oven, carving, and serving dishes with such care that even insiders can find little fault. Its strength lies not in fierce conflict but in the force hidden within stillness: Ge Qing's eccentric temper and blunt speech, Yang Yuejun's generosity and depth of thought—how much heat a cup of tea is refilled with, how much room a greeting leaves—these are the measures of old Beijing's human ties. Jin Yucheng praised it as recalling Lao She's classical narrative rule of "knowing silk and satin above, scallions and garlic below," with Beijing sounds and rhymes and details that sink into the bone; this well describes its texture: clean, with backbone, with flavor. If you have read Qin Qiang, you will recognize the same motif—the disappearance of inheritance and the loss of loyalty and feeling; the difference is that Shoushan pushes the conflict to the space between rule and rule, writing about how a group of reasonable, dignified good people are slowly pushed aside by the times, and is therefore especially helpless and especially moving.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ

About the author

Author

Chang Xiaohu is a contemporary Chinese fiction author about whom limited public information is available; one of his works is currently included in the library. His representative work is Shoushan, a novel that has been adapted into a television series of the same name starring Hu Ge and He Bing, which suggests that the story possesses considerable dramatic tension and popular appeal. In terms of common classification, Chang Xiaohu's writing is grouped under social fiction, a category that typically draws on real life and focuses on how ordinary people confront and make choices amid social change. The fact that Shoushan has been adapted for the screen indicates that it is readable in both characterization and plotting, and it has brought the author a wider readership. Because details such as birth and death years, nationality, education, and writing career remain unavailable, no speculation is made here; the description presents his writing only through the known work and its classification and may be expanded as further information becomes available.
