The Treasure Hunter

The Treasure Hunter King is an urban-life web novel by the author Quan Jinshu Danke, serialized on Qidian Chinese Network. Running to about 3.44 million Chinese characters across more than 1,660 chapters, it was completed in early 2018. The protagonist is Li Du, a young Chinese man studying in Flagstaff, Arizona. When his school is shut down, he finds himself broke and with a lease about to expire. By chance, he obtains from a beer package a crystal encasing a tiny purple insect. The insect burrows into his palm and becomes an energy-based cheat only he can see: he can share its vision, see through soil and obstacles, and slow down time in his perception, enabling him to spot value others miss among piles of junk and abandoned warehouses. With this ability, Li Du breaks into the distinctly American business of storage-unit auctions. He befriends a local treasure picker named Hans Fox and starts by bidding low on unwanted storage units and sorting through old goods, gradually moving into antiques, calligraphy and paintings, cars and motorcycles, precious metals, and jewelry, before expanding into property flipping, gold mining, and even cross-border treasure hunts. Around him gathers a group of animal companions—a margay named Ah Miao, a gray wolf, an Andean condor, a hound, a giant ape, and an African honey badger—that provide much of the book's humor and often assist in his treasure hunts. Told in a light comic tone, the novel interweaves storage-unit finds, treasure appraisal, exotic scenery, and everyday human drama. Its main thread is the protagonist's rise from small warehouses to the millionaire's club, while also portraying his dealings and choices with his partners, landlord, and friends.
