Summary

Ghost Catching is a web novel of folkloric supernatural fiction by the Jiangxi online writer Pan Haigen, long serialized on platforms such as Motie, running to roughly two hundred and seventy chapters. The story begins with "picking up money on the Ghost Festival of the fifteenth of the seventh month": on their way home at night, the protagonist Chen Ergou and his neighbors Old Wang and Xiao Liu find at a crossroads the ground strewn with hundred-yuan bills that look like real cash, only to learn afterward that it was spirit money for the dead—an act that draws him into a string of bizarre supernatural events. He then visits a slovenly old Taoist and asks to be taught how to open his heavenly eye, escapes after encounters with a ghost wall and a Wuchang ghost, and goes on to face a haunted house, a upright coffin with a female corpse, yin-corpse sorcery, paper effigies guarding a wake, the Seven Evil Nails, the soul's return on the seventh day, and one strange affair after another, journeying all the while with Zhang Tianshi, Xiao Nan, and others. Through the eyes of a "yin-yang master," the novel strings together folk rumors of haunted-house feng shui, corpse driving and corpse rising, sorcery, and infant spirits; the plot is tightly linked, the language plain, and the street-level flavor thick. The author has consistently held that supernatural stories are only stories, stressing in his writing the distinction between right and wrong, good and evil, and guiding people toward goodness. This entry refers to Pan Haigen's serialized web version of Ghost Catching; no formally published print edition has been found.

Editor's review

Not a good fit for

Reading tips
