Bad Water

Bad Water is a full-length suspense thriller by author Yinhe (real name Chen Kezhi) and the first installment in his Five Elements Mysteries series, published by Yunnan People's Publishing House in 2011. The story unfolds in a remote mountain village called Bad Water: here the villagers have husbands but no wives, sons but no daughters, and the village's origins and rules are inexplicably strange. A young teacher, Gao Lin, arrives to take up a post at the village school and gradually comes into contact with a secret organization known as the Six-Pointed Star Guards and a series of ancient taboos. A long-circulated "Ballad of the Seven Children" comes true like a curse, and the children die one after another in bizarre ways; at the birthday banquet of the village's centenarian, a troupe of performers of unknown origin takes the stage, spreading an eerie aura that plunges the whole village into deeper panic. Gao Lin, together with the upright and formidable Yang Meng and the aloof, stern outsider Chen Sheng, bonds with them over loyalty and trust, and one after another they deal with mysterious figures such as the Mountain Master, the Wood Guest, and the Star Chief, peeling back the truth layer by layer amid a chain of schemes within schemes, until at last they step into the legendary sealed chamber from which no one returns, while the monster in the depths of the bad water and the shapeless thing in the cave that can be heard but never seen still pull them toward a greater mystery. The book builds its narrative skeleton from traditional cultural elements such as the six-pointed star, Mohist thought, and folk ballads, fusing rural strange tales with modern suspense techniques; sealed chambers, manhunts, conspiracies, and the calculations of the human heart advance layer by layer, with a cold, eerie atmosphere and tight pacing, and it is regarded as one of the author's most representative works.
