Summary

The Nest is the debut novel by American author Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney. Set in and around New York City, it follows the four Plumb siblings. Leo, the eldest, once edited a buzzy magazine and website but now has little left beyond his charm and a marriage in shambles. Beatrice, the second child, was once a celebrated "glitter girl" author; a decade on, she lives off memories while her writing stalls. Jack, the third, runs an antique shop with his partner and hides the true state of their finances from the family. And Melody, the youngest, is a slave to her "good mother" identity, juggling a mortgage and anxiety over her twin daughters' school admissions.

What the four siblings truly count on is a trust fund their father left behind, which they call "the Nest." Under his will, the money cannot be divided among them until Melody, the youngest, turns forty. With her birthday approaching, a ridiculous accident upends everything: Leo, fresh out of rehab, gets drunk at a cousin's wedding, speeds off with a young waitress, and causes a serious car crash. To compensate the other party, their mother is forced to draw on nearly all of the Nest in advance, and a inheritance that could have transformed their futures is reduced to almost nothing in an instant.

Now a group of self-deceiving middle-aged people must confront the hardest question of all: how do we go on after losing every last hope? Told through interlocking storylines and shot through with sharp satire and black humor, the novel captures the inescapable, mutually draining bonds of family—the ways they let each other down and the ways they lend each other strength in a crisis. The Chinese edition, translated by Hu Fei, reads smoothly and preserves the original's fine-grained portrait of upper-middle-class life in New York.

Editor's review

FAQ
