Summary

Beast Taming and Immortal Cultivation is a long fantasy web novel by the online author Momo, serialized on Qidian from 2010. Completed at roughly 1.18 million Chinese characters, it is regarded as a sequel of sorts to the author's earlier work Immortal Cultivation in the Celestial Realm, with which it shares certain worldbuilding elements.

The story opens when Qin Jian, a young man from Earth, is inexplicably summoned to another world by a mysterious force. He awakens in a cold, dank place resembling a sewer, so weak that he can barely move his eyes. To survive in this strange and dangerous world, he relies on his silver tongue and quick wits to proclaim himself the legendary "Emissary of the Moon Goddess" to a dark elf tribe, thereby winning their protection and a foothold. As this identity gradually takes hold, he not only earns the trust of the elves but also unexpectedly gains the favor of the orc war god.

What surprises Qin Jian even more is his near-limitless ability to subdue magical beasts, allowing him to continually gather and tame all manner of creatures for his own use. After more than a year of cultivation, he further discovers that his bloodline is far from ordinary—his parents on Earth were somehow connected to the legends of immortals and demons—and that his own identity points to the lineage of the "demonic." The story thus shifts from a struggle for personal survival to a saga of adventuring across the other world and contending for power: with an iron-fisted, ruthless style, the protagonist maneuvers and clashes among elves, orcs, humans, and other factions, leaving a trail of blood and chaos as he steadily builds his strength and ultimately establishes a vast and glorious empire.

The novel blends Western fantasy elements—elves, orcs, magical beasts, liches—with an Eastern cultivation system, centering on beast taming, level-based cultivation, and territorial expansion, offering the appeal of summoning, base-building, and conquest. By the author's own account, constrained by the online writing environment of the time, the book's ending was rather rushed.

Editor's review

Reading tips
