The Forsaken Monk

In the crowded field of "loser's comeback plus system cheat" fantasy, The Forsaken Monk takes a rather distinctive angle: the protagonist is not a hapless youth but a monk who sought ordination and was refused. The premise itself is full of contrast: prayer beads in hand, killing intent in heart; preaching compassion while fighting to carve out a living for himself and a people forsaken by the gods. The most moving part of the work is not the fighting but the collective metaphor of the "forsaken." Black hair and black eyes are original sin; they are born unable to cultivate battle qi, and generations have been pressed to the bottom. What the protagonist brings is not a savior's gift but a "seed"-style technology and method: he can give others power, but he cannot walk the road for them. The line that recurs throughout the book—"I am only a passerby who brings fire to the forsaken"—distills its spiritual temperament. In style, the author uses banter and everyday humor to cut the bitterness; the protagonist is upright without being a saint, decisive in action, and the supporting characters each have their own color. The flaws are obvious: the pacing drags through the middle and later stretches of more than four million characters, the settings change frequently, and after the scope expands the resolution feels somewhat rushed. But as a passionate fantasy with ideas, it is worth opening when you are short of books.
