Summary

Otherworldly Veterinarian is the breakthrough work of web novelist Fried Bun (real name Li Shibo). It was serialized on Qidian Chinese Network starting February 14, 2007, and concluded on January 25, 2008. The book runs to approximately 611 chapters and more than two million characters; the online version has not been published in print. The protagonist, Chu Tian, is a veterinary student nearing graduation who unexpectedly transmigrates to a continent where magical beasts are the ultimate measure of military power. Here, the strength of nations and families depends largely on the magical pets and dragons they possess; local healing methods consist only of priests invoking "life instinct," and once a magical beast is severely injured or suffers a difficult illness, they are often helpless. Chu Tian, who has no battle aura and no magical talent, can nonetheless save lives through modern veterinary anatomy, diagnostic thinking, and surgical techniques. He begins by treating a severely injured dragon, meets Marquis Karnas, commander of the Fire Dragon Legion, in the Caesar Empire, becomes partners with a mysterious white dog called "Xiao Bai," is accepted as a disciple by a renowned continental priest, but is sent down the mountain for practical training after failing a magical talent test. Thereafter, relying on his unique advantage that "only I can treat magical beasts," he practices medicine, befriends the powerful, charges high consultation fees, creatively combines modern veterinary techniques with otherworldly magic into new healing arts, and gradually becomes entangled in the grand conflicts among dragon clans, the Church, and the divine realm, ultimately reaching the stage of ancient high priests and even the divine domain. The work writes the thrill of "monopolized technology" with a humorous, satirical tone, and also pioneered the "battle domain" setting: the master of a domain is nearly absolute ruler within it, a concept later adopted by a large number of web novels. The book is densely layered with foreshadowing, and the ending closes the timeline into a loop, making it a highly representative work of 2000s otherworld transmigration fiction; the author also won the 2007 Qidian Chinese Network Newcomer King title because of it.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
