Summary

The Metamorphosis Bracelet is an urban supernatural novel by the web author Little Flying Goose (real name Wu Chaoyang, a native of Daqing, Heilongjiang), serialized on Heiyan Chinese Web from April 12, 2014 and completed on December 26, 2015. The book runs about 1.85 million characters, was also published under the original title Brother! I'm Really a Mutant!, and has appeared on platforms including Zhangyue. The story is set in the 1960s of a parallel space resembling Earth: a violent solar storm sweeps the planet, and over the following years a small portion of the population discovers that their bodies have mutated, granting them special abilities ordinary people lack. The protagonist, Wang Ziqing, was born into wealth as the young master of the Xuelan enterprise. An accident six years earlier killed both his parents, and the case remains baffling and unsolved. As an orphan, he works on construction sites to make a living while hiding his identity as a mutant, posing as a lazy, listless ordinary man fond of pretty women in order to avoid being murdered, and secretly investigating the true cause of his parents' deaths. The "Metamorphosis Bracelet" of the title is a key treasure in the story that can greatly enhance a mutant's abilities; precisely for this reason it draws covetous attention from all sides and becomes the trigger for the massacre of Wang Ziqing's family. Wang Ziqing's own ability is "Summoning." Before wearing the bracelet he can summon only one summoned creature at a time, subject to a time limit (his Nokia phone); after putting on the Metamorphosis Bracelet his summoning slots expand to five, and summoned creatures of wildly varied appearance and eccentric temperament—an alpaca, a fat pigeon, a penguin, a gorilla—appear one after another, becoming the most recognizable comic element of the book. As his investigation deepens, he befriends companions such as Bai Yu and Su Qianyi, is drawn into the schemes of the werewolf organization, the power struggles of foreign forces, and conflicts among mutants, and gradually discovers that behind his parents' deaths lies a far greater game than he imagined. The book depicts urban shadow warfare and blood-pumping fights in a humorous, witty style; while pursuing the truth, the protagonist also grows from a "brick-hauling whirlwind" into a strongman able to maneuver among multiple factions. This work is Little Flying Goose's third full-length novel after Lament of the Six Realms and The Loser Daoist; its world is not connected to those two, so readers need not confuse them.

Editor's review

Reading tips
