Annual-format publications play a special role in the publishing system of superhero comics: they do not carry the main narrative forward, yet they often collect one-off stories, side stories, and character spotlights from outside the regular title, making them a convenient entry point for veteran readers completing their reading map and for new readers quickly getting a feel for a work. Annual 04 is built mainly around a Marvel comics collection while also including Batman- and Robin-related material; its editorial approach reflects a cross-title compilation logic, so that different camps and different styles of story can be read within one volume, with a relatively brisk reading rhythm and no worry about falling behind the plot for having missed prior events. For readers who want a systematic understanding of how Western superhero comics are published, such annuals are also an intuitive sample for observing the structure of "regular title—annual—collection." One caveat: the contents and edition information of a compilation are subject to the copyright page of the physical book; before buying, it is advisable to check the table of contents and publisher information to confirm that the included material meets one's reading needs.
