Summary

Herodias (Hérodias) is the third and shortest of the Three Tales (Trois contes, 1877), the late short-story collection by the French writer Gustave Flaubert, and the one set in the most distant past. The story takes place in the fortress of Machaerus, perched on a basalt peak east of the Dead Sea: Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Judea, is holding a great banquet for his birthday, the Roman governor of Syria, Vitellius, is about to arrive, and the atmosphere in the palace is both luxurious and tense. His wife Herodias harbors a grudge against John the Baptist, who is imprisoned in the dungeon—the prophet had publicly denounced her union with Herod as unlawful. Herodias therefore lays a secret plan: she uses her daughter Salome's dance at the banquet to enchant Herod, who then promises to grant her any wish; at her mother's bidding, Salome asks for the prophet's head, and the executioner carries out the order. With archaeological detail, intense color, and a cold narrative manner, Flaubert compresses the palace intrigues, desire, and religious fanaticism into a single day and night, ending in the silence of the prophet's disciples as they await the Messiah. The work later deeply influenced Oscar Wilde's Salome and other later creations. This translation is of a single work; if the reader's copy is a collection or anthology, the specific edition should be consulted.

Editor's review

Reading tips

  1. 建议与《三故事》另两篇(《淳朴的心》《圣朱利安传奇》)对读,体会福楼拜由近及古的时间倒序安排。
  2. 阅读时留意器物、服饰、地理等细节描写,它们承担了叙事与象征的双重功能。
  3. 若手边有英文或法文原文,可挑宴席与地牢两段对照,感受其句法与节奏。
  4. 可延伸阅读《马可福音》《马太福音》中施洗约翰之死的记载,再回看福楼拜的改写与留白。

FAQ

About the author

Gustave Flaubert Author · France · 1821–1880

Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880) was a French realist novelist of the nineteenth century, born in Rouen and died at Croisset. Known for his objective, detached description and meticulously crafted style, he is regarded as one of the founders of the modern Western novel. His major works include Madame Bovary, Sentimental Education, Salammbô and Three Tales. Madame Bovary probes the gap between ordinary reality and romantic desire through the marriage and illusions of a provincial woman, while the Dictionary of Received Ideas mocks popular prejudices and clichés in dictionary form. His writing stresses precision and rhythm of language, and he often revised his sentences repeatedly, exerting a lasting influence on later fiction and ideas of style.
