Summary

Superstar is an urban entertainment novel by the web author Qiqijia d Maomao. It began serialization on Chuangshi Chinese Network in late 2013 and was officially launched in 2014; it is one of the more representative works of 'American entertainment fiction' (web novels about the European and American entertainment industry) in both length and reputation, totaling roughly seven million characters and now complete. The story is set in the European and American entertainment industry of the 1990s. The protagonist, Hugo Lancaster, was originally a struggling actor and a member of an underground rock band; on January 14, 1992, he received the 'Worst Actor' award at the 12th Golden Raspberry Awards and became the first person in history to attend in person to accept it. At the lowest point of his life, his path diverged completely: he plunged into the rock wave that was gathering strength, while grinding out his acting craft on Hollywood sets one film after another. In 1993, rock titans rose together; in 1994, film masterpieces gathered; and the name Hugo Lancaster appeared again and again on the lists of those years. The novel depicts the concrete labor in recording studios, on tour, on film sets, and at award ceremonies, while also portraying the warmth and coldness of human relations in the world of fame—being used, betrayed, and misunderstood, but also genuine friends and lovers. Drawing on a large backdrop of real musicians, filmmakers, and works, the work recreates the music and film ecology of an era in an interweaving of fact and fiction; its main line is the protagonist's step-by-step rise from a mocked Razzie winner to an unavoidable name in music and film history.

Editor's review

Reading tips
