Summary

The Lair is a novel by the Romanian writer Norman Manea, published in 2009 under the Romanian title Vizuina. This Chinese edition, translated directly from the original by Mo Yan and Xu Taijie, was published by New Star Press in 2019 (an earlier version, rendered from the French by Yu Zhongxian, preceded it). The novel is a portrait of a group of Eastern European intellectuals in exile in America. Augustin Gora has left Romania to settle in New York, living alone in a "lair" surrounded by books, and his greatest passion is writing satirical obituaries for his contemporaries. He often recalls the past in his homeland, especially his ex-wife Lu—who refused to leave with him at the time, and later appeared in America alongside her cousin and lover, Peter Gaspar. Peter, descendant of a Nazi concentration-camp survivor, has never fit in with the world; when he receives an anonymous postcard threatening death, the narrative suddenly accelerates, Gora receives a cry for help, and finds himself drawn into a maze with no exit. The story broadly pivots on three generations of Romanian intellectuals: the old generation represented by Professor Dima; the middle generation of Gora, the murdered Professor Parade, and Dr. Cozzi; and the next, Peter. In the "free world" they experience intellectual freedom and competitive opportunity, while also facing language barriers, the struggle for survival, and the crushing weight of a past life and homeland culture they cannot shed. The novel employs temporal inversion, fragmentation, and abundant intertextuality, citing works such as The Magic Mountain and Death and the Compass, weaving together three worlds—concentration-camp memory, everyday life under totalitarianism, and consumerist America—to explore the exile's sense of belonging, the dialectic of freedom and imprisonment, and the ultimate experience of birth, aging, illness, and death. The book is divided into four parts and includes a translator's preface.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
