The Pinky Ring

The Pinky Ring is a full-length youth romance novel by the web novelist Ru Ruo, published in 2009 by International Cultural Publishing Company as a two-volume paperback set totaling roughly 660,000 characters. The story centers on Ji Xiaoyou, a strong and independent young woman: introduced in a Cinderella-like predicament, she is unexpectedly drawn into the emotional vortex between the aristocratic young man Yin Shu and the pop superstar Xu Nian'en, which in turn unravels a strange mystery of her origins and two generations of entangled grudges. The novel uses the pinky ring as its central image; through the ancient curse said to cling to this tiny ring, it tells of a lifelong, deathless betrothal vow to love only one person and of a fate ordained by destiny. At the same time, the author deliberately breaks the traditional Cinderella template, portraying Yin Shu's mother as an "evil Cinderella" and making the male lead loathe fairy-tale narratives of love, thereby exploring a more complex human nature. The book builds its emotions through intricate daily detail and intense feeling, encompassing the helplessness of lovers forced apart and questions about protection, sacrifice, and forgiveness. As one of Ru Ruo's representative works, The Pinky Ring won the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the second Hongxiu Tianxiang Chinese-Language Romance Competition and was described by the media as one of the year's most promising debuts by a new romance writer; its prequel, Snow of the Fallen City, was also released afterwards.
