Summary

The Match is a long novel of jianghu strategy by Chang Shuxin following his novel Yu Zui, published in 2017 by China Democracy and Legal System Publishing House, also known as The Match: My Jianghu Notes. The world of the book revolves around an ancient sect: the Jiangxiang Sect calls itself the "prime minister of the jianghu," its members neither entering official service nor mingling with bandits, a path of their own. The sect is said to possess a rare book titled Yingyao Pian, attributed to Liu Bowen, which is said to hide a great secret capable of letting its holder withdraw from the jianghu entirely and live out a peaceful old age. The protagonist, Shuai Lang, is the son of a railway police captain; he grew up with his father on trains, absorbing everything around him, and has a particularly keen nose for swindlers and swindles. By chance he meets Gu Qingzhi, the contemporary head of the Jiangxiang Sect, and sees through his scheme on the spot. Gu Qingzhi is not angered but instead recognizes Shuai Lang's extraordinary talent and resolves to train him as the next head of the sect. Just then, Gu Qingzhi's former senior disciple, Duanmu Jieping, returns from abroad, and the struggle over Yingyao Pian begins. A match between masters unfolds, with layer upon layer of schemes and move upon move of counterplay, and the ending is unexpected. The book uses jianghu con artistry as its shell and the contest of human nature as its core, weaving together master-disciple inheritance, sect grudges, and police investigation, with tight pacing that retains Chang Shuxin's signature street-level vividness and criminal-investigation texture.

Editor's review

About the author

Chang Shuxin Author · China · 1975

Chang Shuxin, whose real name is Chang Shuxin, was born in 1975 in Qinshui, Shanxi. A Chinese online literature writer, he was among the first group of "online writers" at the Shanxi Online Literature Academy, and readers often call him "Lao Chang." He has long focused on police, crime, and criminal investigation fiction, skillfully unfolding deduction and reversals within realistic case structures, giving his suspense narratives a sense of social observation. His representative works include Yu Zui, Black Pot, The Game, and Business Sea Espionage. Yu Zui sold over a million copies, and its eponymous web series became a phenomenal hit in 2016, leading many to regard him as one of the representative authors of online criminal investigation fiction. His works are usually classified as suspense and social fiction; fourteen titles are included in the collection, and series such as the Anti-Fraud Case series and The Game series continue to show his interest in scams, games of strategy, and the gray areas of human nature.
