Treasure Pupil

Treasure Pupil is an urban antique-appraisal web novel by Dong Ren on Qidian, spanning roughly 4.27 million Chinese characters. Serialization began in 2014 and concluded in 2019 at 1,446 chapters. The story is set in Quancheng (also called Lancheng in the book) around the year 2000, and follows Liu Dong, a young man from a poor mountain village. He has a carving skill learned from a carpenter back home and once made a living selling wood carvings at a stall in the antique market. By chance, a Buddha relic merges into his body and grants him a special ability called "Relic Radiance": he can perceive an object's internal structure, material, and age, gains a storage space of about one cubic meter, and can identify basic information about antiques, calligraphy and paintings, jade, and bronzes. But the ability is not omnipotent: using it requires calm concentration and is limited by both physical stamina and mental energy, and judging high-grade cultural relics still depends on his own accumulated appraisal experience. Around this premise, the novel unfolds along a chain of "appraising treasures, spotting bargains, betting on stones, competing over treasures, and treasure hunting." Starting from small items at a street stall, Liu Dong gradually ventures into jade rough stones, the authenticity of paintings and calligraphy, heavy bronzes, and treasures from sunken ships, building his career through contests with peers and dealings with capital. The work features all kinds of antiques and curios, interspersed with Chinese and foreign master paintings, ceramics, bronzes, and treasure-hunting threads such as undersea wrecks, Sun Dianying's hidden hoard, the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom treasure, and the City of Gold. Briskly paced throughout, it offers both the tricks and lore of the antique trade and the satisfaction of an underdog's rise, making it a substantial entry in the urban antique-appraisal genre.
