Official Reputation

Official Reputation is a long novel about the ups and downs of officialdom by the web novelist Ge Yu. It was first serialized on Qidian Chinese Network, runs to 743 chapters in total, and is complete. The story opens with An Zaitao, a county deputy party secretary on secondment in the prime of his life, dying accidentally in a fire—only to be reborn back in July 1998. Armed with memories of his previous life, he starts over from scratch as a lowly reporter. Drawing on his sense of where the times are heading, his thorough understanding of human relations, and his sense of propriety in handling matters, he works his way back into officialdom and rises rapidly. The novel unfolds around power struggles, the handling of safety incidents, a complex web of personal relationships, and economic development efforts such as preparations for a development zone and attracting investment, with key figures including a provincial party secretary and a female city party secretary. The book advances through volumes such as Forging Ahead Through the Torrent, Mainstay in Midstream, and Toward Glory, and ends with An Zaitao taking office as party secretary of Dongshan City. The work does not stop at the thrill of a reborn protagonist with every advantage; it repeatedly asks what, between the "way" and the "technique" of officialdom, a person truly relies on to gain a foothold and to earn genuine "official reputation." Compared with works of the same type, Ge Yu's writing pays more attention to textual quality and the inner depths of his characters, with a rhythm that balances tension and ease, described by readers as "like fine wine—the more you savor it, the richer it becomes."
