Perfect Starlight

Perfect Starlight is a long urban-life novel by the web author Wuqiandang. Serialization began on Qidian in 2015 and concluded on March 2, 2016; the book runs about 870,000 characters in 326 chapters. Continuing the author's Hong Kong urban narrative approach from the earlier Dream of Hong Kong, it turns its lens on Hong Kong in the early 1980s. The protagonist, Ye Tian, is a young man armed with modern memories and an industrial vision. He smuggles himself into Hong Kong penniless, yet keenly recognizes that the city before him stands at a juncture where film, music, real estate, and finance are all expanding at once. He starts from TVB's actor training class, accumulates his first capital by writing novels and singing in nightclubs, then moves into film and television production, participating in projects such as Five Lucky Stars, gradually founds Oriental Records, ventures into bank acquisitions, real estate operations, and stock market maneuvers, and ultimately takes control of Asia Television. Meanwhile, he forms friendships with fellow training-class students Zhou Xingchi, Liang Chaowei, Liu Dehua, and others, and becomes entangled romantically with female characters such as Zhao Yanzhi. The novel does not rely on supernatural premises but places every leap of the protagonist within a real historical context and industry logic: competition in the TV station's training class, the rivalry between Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest, the market atmosphere around the Sino-British negotiations, and the shock of the 1987 stock market crash all become realistic conditions driving the plot. The 'starlight' in the title refers both to the dazzling surface of Hong Kong's entertainment industry and to the process by which an individual continually recalibrates direction and keeps shining within the coordinates of the era.
