Song Wind

Song Feng is a long-form alternate history novel by the web author Jienian. Serialization began on Qidian Chinese Network in May 2006, and Zhuhai Publishing House released it in multiple volumes in 2008, with the first volume subtitled "Clouds Rising." The protagonist, Wang Jinghui, was originally a medic in a modern army. After an accident, he is transported to the Northern Song dynasty during the reign of Emperor Yingzong, bringing his equipment with him. He treats injuries with modern medical knowledge and earns his first capital by improving glassware. He opens a clinic for commoners in Bianjing and becomes famous for performing surgery. He then improves movable type printing and runs workshops, gradually building up reputation and business interests. At an auction, he meets Zhao Xu, the Prince of Ying, who has not yet ascended the throne, and Princess Zhao Qianyu of Shu. From then on, he becomes increasingly involved with the imperial family and the political landscape of the Song dynasty. During the Puyi controversy, he becomes embroiled in high-level political maneuvering for the first time as he seeks to establish an urban epidemic prevention system as early as possible. Set in the Northern Song on the eve of Wang Anshi's reforms, the novel brings the protagonist into contact with Wang Anshi, Sima Guang, Su Shi, Su Zhe, and others, exploring an alternative path Song China might have taken through both technological and institutional reform. The author emphasizes historical logic and avoids making the protagonist a conqueror or hegemon; instead, reform is repeatedly negotiated and tested between the court and the provinces.
