Song Xiang

Song Xiang is a historical military web novel by Mulin Sen 444, serialized on Qidian from December 2017 and now complete, running to over a thousand chapters and more than a million characters. The story begins in 1162, the thirty-second year of the Shaoxing era of the Southern Song. That year, the Jin ruler Wanyan Liang's southern campaign failed, the Jin army withdrew north after the Battle of Caishi, Emperor Gaozong abdicated, and the Southern Song court in Lin'an barely held on to half the realm: outside, Jin cavalry watched hungrily; inside, ministers fought for power and wavered between war and peace; farther north, the Mongol tribes were quietly rising on the steppe; and at the empire's southern edge, religious and local ambitions were swelling. The protagonist, Yang Yan, a youth from Linji Village, starts as an unknown newcomer in the army and is drawn into the chaos around the Northern Expedition—the bloody battles beneath Hongxian and outside Suzhou, the disputes and suspicions in the Jiankang court, the clashes of the Jianghuai river fleet, and the seesaw struggle in the northwest against Western Xia. His growth arc links battlefield slaughter, court intrigue, martial-world grudges and emotional entanglements, in a non-time-travel approach: historical fact stops here, and the history that follows is replayed by the story. The book's narrative scope is broad, balancing the growth of famous generals, iron-blooded campaigns and dynastic rise and fall; it lays much groundwork and moves slowly at the start, with intrigue and warfare increasingly interwoven as it proceeds. It suits readers who love the Southern Song setting and long novels running war scenes and court intrigue in parallel.
