About the author
Gu Xiang is an author whose name appears on Chinese-language publications; publicly available information about her is limited, and details of her life, nationality, and dates of birth and death remain unclear. Three of her works are held in the collection: The Picture of Dorian Gray, Peter Rabbit, and Hua Liaozhai. Together they show a range that spans the translation and introduction of foreign literature as well as reworkings of classical Chinese material. The Picture of Dorian Gray belongs to the canon of world and foreign literature, Peter Rabbit is a widely loved work of children's literature, and Hua Liaozhai draws on the classical Chinese tale tradition of Liaozhai Zhiyi. Judging from these titles, Gu Xiang's work consists largely of editing, translating, or adapting classic texts, moving from British aestheticist fiction and children's stories to the Chinese supernatural tale tradition, and reflecting an editorial interest in both foreign classics and native classical writing. In the absence of reliable biographical sources, no conjectures about her life are offered here; the works alone are used to sketch her subjects and orientation.
