Summary

The Threat (original English title The Threat Below) is a novel by the American writer and screenwriter Jason Latshaw. The story takes place three hundred years after a great catastrophe: the power of a terrible monster rose and nearly drove humanity to extinction. A small band of survivors of the massacre fled to the peaks of a mountain near the clouds, where, with meager resources, a few hundred people keep the species alive. Three hundred years later, resources on the mountaintop grow scarcer, and population, order, and power become tense and fragile. After an ordinary but transgressive act of curiosity, the seventeen-year-old girl Aethrin is forced down the mountain into the world below, a forbidden land in the eyes of her elders. In an environment wholly unsuited to human survival, she must face the legendary beasts and struggle to stay alive; and in the course of dealing with the enemy, she gradually realizes that things are not as simple as the elders on the mountaintop say: behind the catastrophe that destroyed humanity centuries ago lies a secret deliberately concealed. The novel is divided into four parts—"At the Top of the World," "Leaving the Mountaintop World," "Coming to the World Below," and "Returning Home"—with tight pacing and a vivid cinematic sense of scene; it is both a coming-of-age adventure for young readers and a warning about the consequences of human science, including genetic technology.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
