The Born Miracle Doctor

The Born Miracle Doctor is a long urban medical novel by the web novelist Liaoliao Yisheng. Born Ouyang Fu, the author once worked as a radiologist. The book runs to more than 5.5 million characters; serialization began on Zongheng Chinese Network in May 2010 and concluded at the end of 2012. The premise is a twist on time travel: the protagonist, Gu Feng, is a frustrated physician of ancient times, skilled in both medicine and martial arts, who is caught up in a court intrigue and hunted down, until he is finally struck dead by lightning. By chance, he crosses into the modern metropolis of Shencheng, body and skills intact, and is saved by Su Man'er, president of Minxing Pharmaceuticals. A man with an ancient mind, versed in pulse diagnosis and the four diagnostic methods and trained in martial arts, plunges into a modern world of high-rises and traffic, business and hospitals. The story unfolds in three volumes: "Entering the World," "The Academy," and "Benefiting the World." Gu Feng first learns the rudiments of modern life in the city, saves people at critical moments with his superb medical skill, earns a name for himself, and thereby gathers a chain of grudges and friendships. He then enters an academic setting and deals with intern teachers, classmates, and scions of prominent families; later he is drawn into business wars, gangs, and tangled human affairs, growing all the while along the path of "healing the world with the left hand, shaking the cosmos with the right." Built on a skeleton of medical episodes, the work intersperses urban face-slapping, confidantes, and jianghu strife, and is a fairly representative example of the doctor-genre power fantasy of its day.
