Heavenly Official

Heavenly Official is a historical web novel by Yan Jiu, a top author on China Literature's Yuewen Group. Serialized on Qidian.com starting in 2012 and completed on July 29, 2013, it runs 178 chapters and about 550,000 characters. The story is set in the thirteenth year of the Zhengde era of the Ming dynasty: the Zhengde Emperor leads his army on a border inspection in the capital, Prince Ning Zhu Chenhao secretly plots rebellion in Nanchang, and the Prince of Xing in Anlu devotes himself to alchemy and ignores state affairs. At Xishan Temple outside Anlu, a young monk named Daochi appears; he carries water, chants sutras, and keeps company with the birds of the mountains. He seems ordinary, but his origins hold a secret—his identity was swapped and he was fostered in the family temple, and he comes from somewhere else entirely. As the plot advances, Daochi is drawn into internal family strife and chooses to descend the mountain and enter the world, rising through the civil service examinations: he first becomes a study companion to the Prince of Xing's heir, then takes part in responding to the turmoil of Prince Ning's rebellion. The heir later becomes the Jiajing Emperor, and Daochi follows him to the capital, climbing step by step through court intrigue until he reaches the first rank of officialdom. The book unfolds in three major sections—"A Leaf Falls," "Companion to the Prince," and "Rising to the Blue Clouds"—tracing his path from young monk to first-rank minister. With a plain, meticulous style, the author lays out Ming institutions, architecture, food, etiquette, and music, and also depicts the teahouses, entertainers' quarters, markets, and countryside, revealing the bright and dark sides of human nature, creating a picture with a documentary feel for history.
