Among the crowded lists of high-Tang time-travel novels, Heavenly Khagan is one that is often brought up again and again. It pins its timeline to the eve of the power transfer between Princess Taiping and Li Longji, opening with a countdown of certain death in a little over a year, pressing the pressure of survival directly onto the reader's heart, so the pacing carries a natural urgency. Xifeng Jin's language leans toward the classical: the lights of Chang'an, the night banquets in the mansions, the coded speech at court are all rendered with texture, and the reading carries the flavor of old vernacular fiction. Even more rare is that the author does not write the protagonist as an all-conquering wish-fulfillment figure who rises triumphantly throughout; instead he lets power wash over and gradually alienate him, with lust for power and emotion pulling against each other. It is not an easy read, yet it tends to stay with you. At 1.81 million characters the book has real heft, suited to readers willing to settle in and follow a full-length novel to the end. A warning: the book contains heavy political scheming and explicit emotional passages, so readers with delicate tastes or a preference for serious historical reading should be prepared.
