Heavenly Tribulation Doctor

Heavenly Tribulation Doctor is a modern cultivation novel by Sheng Ji, serialized on Qidian Chinese Network since January 2008. It runs about 2.47 million characters and is complete. Its central premise is unusual: cultivators spend enormous effort reaching the point of ascension, only to fear the heavenly tribulation above all else—and yet there exists a profession dedicated to undergoing that tribulation on others' behalf: the "heavenly tribulation doctor." The protagonist, Wen Tao, appears to be an ordinary mild-mannered young doctor in a small clinic, no different from a college student. In reality he possesses the ability to absorb heavenly tribulation: the nine-fold heavenly thunder that others dread as death itself, he can swallow in a single gulp without harm. The price is that this constitution also prevents him from condensing true qi and practicing cultivation techniques like ordinary people. The story begins in a small town: Wen Tao leaves his hometown and goes to his uncle Hu Kaizhu's Go parlor, where someone comes to cause trouble and he secretly intervenes. He then takes over a clinic, which comes with a young nurse attached—and the trouble is that the two are forced to share living quarters. As his reputation for helping others survive tribulation grows, cultivation forces such as the Mount Shu Sword Sect and the Bibo Sea and Sky make their appearances, and the clinic, "Shuxin Clinic," gradually becomes an object of courtship from all sides. To explore the secrets of his own body he enters urban life, then moves through the cultivation world, the immortal world, and still vaster realms, ultimately forging a unique path that takes medicine as its way and tribulation as its blade. The book advances through alternating stand-alone medical cases and sect conflicts; its language is witty and its pacing brisk, making it one of the representative early works of the "doctor genre + modern cultivation" vein.
