Claymore, Vol. 6

Claymore is a dark fantasy manga by Norihiro Yagi, serialized in Monthly Shonen Jump from 2001 and later moved to Jump Square, running 27 volumes in total. The story is set in a world where yoma disguised as humans prey on human innards: humanity's only recourse are the "Claymores," warriors transformed with yoma flesh who fight with giant swords on their backs. They possess superhuman strength, yet are regarded by humans as alien, and constantly face the risk of their yoki running out of control and turning them into monsters entirely. This volume is the sixth in the series, The Endless Gravestones, collecting episodes 28 through 33: the first half continues the "Slayers" arc, with Clare joining Miria, Helen, Deneve, and other warriors against a terrifying male Awakened Being, finding an opening through yoki perception in a hard-fought battle; the second half shifts into the "Endless Gravestones" arc, introducing a new extermination mission and new formidable foes, with the story continuing into Volume 7. By this stage in the series, the narrative focus has shifted from "slaying yoma" to the undercurrents between warriors and the Organization: whether the missions the Organization assigns have ulterior motives, and whether companions can truly entrust themselves to one another, both become unresolved questions. Norihiro Yagi's art is cold and sharp, his fight choreography full of tension, while his restrained brushwork explores the tragic theme of "the blurred line between human and monster," making this a long-running series with a distinctive temperament among shonen fantasy manga.
