Restoring Qin

Summary
Restoring Qin is a historical time-travel web novel by Yixiao Yikurong, first serialized on Chuangshi Chinese Network (a platform under China Literature Group) and running to roughly 270 chapters in total; meticulously proofread editions have been archived on sites such as Zhixuan Cangshu. Set in the final years of the Qin dynasty, the novel opens as the First Emperor has just died: Chen Sheng and Wu Guang raise the banner of revolt, the Second Emperor Huhai neglects state affairs, the Chancellor Zhao Gao holds absolute power, the old aristocrats of the six states restore their realms one after another, and war flares on every border, leaving the once-unified Qin Empire on the brink of collapse. At this moment a modern man is transported back in time and into the body of Ziying, son of Prince Fusu—the Qin prince who in history surrendered to Liu Bang and was soon killed by Xiang Yu. Armed with modern knowledge and a foreknowledge of history, he begins by eliminating Zhao Gao and quelling the turmoil in Xianyang, then regathers the old forces of the Guanzhong region and crosses swords with the towering figures of the late Qin and early Han—Liu Bang, Xiang Yu, Zhang Liang, Han Xin and others—through the standoff at Yao Pass, the fierce fighting at Lantian, the decisive battle at the Ba River, and the retreat to Longxi followed by counterattacks. With "staunch old Qin, together we face the nation's peril; our blood not yet dry, we fight to the death" as its spiritual refrain, the book interweaves battlefield slaughter with court intrigue, following a bid for supremacy that seeks to prolong Qin's life within the established course of history. The author has done some research on details—for instance, modeling the character Han Tan on the pre-Qin to Western Han convention that eunuchs were not necessarily castrated. The overall style is weighty, the plot is rather harrowing, and multi-threaded scheming and battle descriptions are dense; it is one of the more representative works in the alternate-history fiction of the late Qin.
Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
