Summary

This book is an illustrated bilingual Chinese-English collector's edition of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the long narrative poem by the English Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Comprising seven parts, the poem was written in 1798 and first appeared as the opening poem in Lyrical Ballads, the collaborative collection by Coleridge and William Wordsworth. In the poem, an old sailor stops a guest on his way to a wedding and recounts his experiences at sea: a great ship encounters a storm during its voyage, is driven toward the equator, and drifts into the frozen world of the South Pole; an albatross flies in and perches on the ship, and the old sailor kills it for no reason. Punishment follows: the ship is becalmed on a dead sea without wind or water, the crew members die one by one in strange circumstances, and only the old sailor survives to endure remorse and solitude, until a mysterious pardon and repentance bring him home. Through the old sailor's voice, the poem reveals the powerful and mysterious force of fate, the existential predicaments in which humanity is often trapped, and the unconscious evil that individuals commit out of momentary impulse. This edition, translated by Ye Zi and following the standard 1817 version, includes the translation of the main text, epigraph, and marginal glosses, along with a preface by the American scholar John Livingston Lowes and full-color illustrations by Edward A. Wilson, presented in an oversized hardcover format.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ

About the author

Samuel Taylor Coleridge is an important poet and critic of English Romantic literature, known for his bizarre imagination, mysterious atmosphere, and musical language. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is one of his most widely circulated works, telling of an old sailor who brings disaster upon himself by shooting an albatross and then undergoes a voyage of expiation and redemption, combining narrative tension with symbolic meaning. The edition in our catalog, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner: Illustrated Collector's Edition, belongs to foreign literature and presents the poem with illustrations, helping readers feel its imagery and atmosphere while reading the text. Public information about Coleridge's life, education, and specific experiences is limited, so it is not expanded here; readers may turn to the poem itself to appreciate Romantic poetry's attention to imagination, nature, and spiritual themes, as well as the work's lasting influence on later literature and art.

Edward A. Wilson is an author with limited information recorded in this catalog, where only one work, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner: Illustrated Collector's Edition, is listed under the category of foreign literature. Because public information is limited, his nationality, dates of birth and death, and full English name cannot be confirmed. Judging from this representative work, his writing is closely related to the poetic classics, and the phrase "illustrated collector's edition" in the title suggests that the book may present the text with illustrations, serving both reading and collecting needs. The available materials are not enough to outline his life or the full scope of his writing. Readers who wish to learn about this author should begin with this work, paying attention to its textual arrangement, translation or annotation, and the relationship between the illustrations and the poem, so as to appreciate his approach to presenting a classic text.
