The Traitor

The story opens with a coup in North Africa that draws the world's attention: a small mercenary unit is betrayed and all but wiped out, and the Chinese mercenary Qi Tianlin survives by mere chance amid gunfire, sand, and charred corpses. He vows to find the traitor who sold out his comrades. With the vast sea of humanity offering almost no leads, he can only follow the trail through the gray zones where arms, intelligence, and rival factions intersect. At the edge of death he acquires a constitution and abilities beyond those of ordinary people, and the word "traitor" turns from a private grudge into a mirror that reflects his own predicament.

The novel's early sections focus on the manhunt and mercenary combat, while the middle and later parts gradually expand to North Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and eventually a global network of business, politics, and intelligence, involving private military contractors, energy and financial capital, and great-power rivalry. Its detailed depictions of small arms, tactical movement, and wilderness and urban combat are regarded as the book's most distinctive feature. It also weaves in threads of romance, conspiracy, adventure, loyalty, and fervor. The pace is brisk and the scope keeps widening, and the later political speculation and the characters' positions have sparked considerable controversy.
