This volume is the 29th in the Marvel Transformers original series, corresponding to issue 29 of the US main series, 'Crater Critters.' The story picks up from what came before: Goldbug and Blaster resolve to leave the Ark and investigate the Decepticons on their own. They seek out the wealthy Blackrock and force from him a rumor that a 'meteorite' has fallen in northern Arizona, and set off to investigate. The 'meteorite' is in fact a cargo ship that the Decepticons launched from Cybertron to steal Earth's energy, but it crashed by accident, and the captain's prolonged failure to report to Cybertron draws the attention of the fuel auditor Ratbat. Ratbat dispatches the three Triple Changers Astrotrain, Blitzwing, and Octane through a space bridge to Earth to investigate. At the crater's edge, the human scientist Walter Huddleston leads an expedition, and the young researcher Charlie Fong, unwilling to be kept behind the military cordon, meets Goldbug and Blaster and allies with them. The three forces converge at the crater and a melee soon erupts. The real calamity lies in the ship's cargo hold: a species of microscopic metallic parasites called Scraplets, able to disguise themselves as nuts, bolts, and screws, which infest mechanical life forms and multiply rapidly, causing the infected to waste away swiftly. The ship's captain has long since died of infection; the Triple Changers fall victim one after another, and Blaster too falls into the crater and contracts the disease. Charlie Fong proposes taking a crushed Scraplet specimen back to the laboratory to seek a cure, and Goldbug has no choice but to leave Blaster behind; Blaster, believing himself abandoned by his closest friend, vows revenge on the spot, while the hesitant Goldbug is himself infected along the way. This volume introduces the Triple Changers and the Scraplets head-on for the first time in the US series and is a notably pivotal volume in the original comics.
