Thirteen Curses

Thirteen Curses is an original romance-supernatural novel that author Kiya.s began serializing on Jinjiang Literature City in August 2008, totaling roughly 290,000 Chinese characters. Set in a modern city, the story revolves around a curse that has endured for a thousand years: Baifu, a girl so ordinary as to be almost invisible, encounters a string of strange occurrences, after which her appearance and fate change dramatically, drawing her into the entanglements of Ling Hao, Ning Xiao, Ji Yan, and others. The romance line forms the main thread, advanced through a multitude of eerie incidents: an unfortunate faceless girl, a mirage that appears at night, an inverted bronze hanging coffin, a chilling scroll of human skin, and thirteen vengeful ghosts bound by the curse. As the investigation deepens, a buried tale of a mysterious ancient kingdom and a poignant, tragic love from a thousand years ago gradually surfaces. The curse laid down in that era has not faded with time; instead, a thousand years later it continues to collect its debt, turning this life's encounter into a reckoning of old grievances. The novel uses a female protagonist's point of view, with tags of supernatural, thriller, past and present lives, and drama; the author states the creative intent as "behind every vengeful ghost lies a story—desolate, helpless, or full of regret," so beyond the horror atmosphere it also dwells on human weakness, obsession, and unwillingness to let go. The book is structured into volumes including "Mirage," "Two-Faced Beauty," and "The Human-Skin Scroll," each centering on a haunted locale or an old case while gradually filling in the hidden thread from a thousand years ago.
