Editor's review

The Way of Innovation is a systematic work by Professor Li Nan based on years of research in innovation management and cases from indigenous Chinese enterprises. Its value lies in its distinctive dual perspective: it surveys the international frontier of innovation theory while being rooted in China's specific business environment and innovation ecosystem. The author does not stop at theoretical exposition; through a wealth of vivid domestic corporate cases (covering traditional manufacturing, internet technology and services), he analyzes the full chain from innovative conception to market success, offering particularly original insights on the leap from "imitative innovation" to "leading innovation."

Compared with similar books, its standout feature is its pragmatic orientation. Professor Li Nan proposes an operational "innovation diagnostic framework" to help organizations assess their innovation health and bottlenecks. The chapters on "cultivating an innovation culture" and "designing fault-tolerant mechanisms" address the deep organizational dilemmas many Chinese companies face in pursuing innovation, offering solutions that are both thoughtful and practical.

For readers, the value of reading this book lies not only in acquiring knowledge but in stimulating structured innovative thinking. It avoids empty slogans and, with rigorous logic and empirical cases, makes "innovation"—an often generalized concept—manageable and executable. Although some theoretical models may be somewhat complex for beginners, the rich case narratives provide a good balance. This is a pragmatic guide that can truly accompany managers and entrepreneurs through the fog of innovation.

Reading tips

  1. It is recommended to read the first two chapters through to build a theoretical framework, then selectively read the case chapters closely according to your interests or field of work

FAQ

How deep is the book's theory, and is it suitable for readers without a management background?
The book integrates classic theory with frontier practice and is somewhat systematic. The author lowers the threshold through numerous cases, but some chapters involve model analysis; beginners are advised to read the case sections alongside, or read twice to deepen understanding gradually.
Are the cases in the book outdated?
The cases are drawn mainly from Chinese business practice over the past decade. Although the context of some well-known cases has changed, the innovation logic and decision-making frameworks the author highlights retain lasting reference value; the cases' core purpose is to illustrate methodology, not timeliness.
How does this book differ from classic foreign works on innovation (such as The Innovator's Dilemma)?
The book draws fully on international theory, but its core concerns and cases focus on the Chinese context. It places more emphasis on answering how companies, under China's market and institutional environment, can concretely manage the innovation process and overcome organizational obstacles, achieving a leap from importing theory to localized practice.
