Editor's review

Professor Liu Xianquan's Forensic Science (Fifth Edition) is a classic textbook on criminal law with a grand system and profound insights. Its value has long transcended that of an ordinary textbook, making it an authoritative reference essential for legal scholars and practitioners alike. The book's most distinctive feature lies in its "problem consciousness" and "local concern." Rather than simply listing mainstream views or restating legal provisions, the author takes the normative system of China's Criminal Code as the skeleton and delves into the legal logic, historical evolution, and difficult disputes in judicial practice behind each core concept and institution. The book's comparison and reflection on the "three-tier" and "four-element" systems of crime theory, and its subtle exposition of complex issues such as joint crime and the forms of multiple crimes, all reflect the author's deep theoretical foundation and unique academic insights. The fifth edition has been comprehensively updated in accordance with the latest legislative developments, including Amendment (XI) to the Criminal Law, ensuring the timeliness and前沿性 of its content. Reading this book, readers can not only systematically grasp the knowledge framework of Chinese criminal law, but also train a rigorous and dialectical legal way of thinking, and learn how to weigh legal interests, interpret norms, and apply the law in specific cases. It is not only a carrier of knowledge, but also a crucible for forging the thinking of legal professionals.

FAQ

What are the main features of this book compared with Professor Zhang Mingkai's Criminal Law?
Professor Liu Xianquan's Criminal Law has a more traditional system that is closer to domestic mainstream views and teaching syllabi; its exposition emphasizes integration with Chinese judicial practice, and its language style is relatively plain. It is one of the mainstream textbooks designated by many law schools. Professor Zhang Mingkai's work, by contrast, is distinguished by its distinctive academic viewpoints and deep background in German and Japanese criminal law theory, and has a stronger flavor of academic debate. Both are top-quality works; which to choose can be decided based on one's stage of study, institutional requirements, or academic preferences.
What are the important updates in the fifth edition compared with previous editions?
The most important update in the fifth edition is the comprehensive incorporation of the content of Amendment (XI) to the Criminal Law, providing timely theoretical interpretation and systematic positioning of the revised provisions in multiple areas such as the age of criminal responsibility, financial crimes, and public health crimes. At the same time, the author has optimized some theoretical expositions and updated some references and practical cases.
Can this book be read directly without a legal background?
As a core textbook for university law majors, this book presupposes that readers have a certain basic knowledge of law. For readers with no legal background at all, reading it directly may feel dense with theoretical concepts and somewhat difficult. It is suggested that they first gain a preliminary understanding of basic legal concepts and criminal law through some introductory legal popularization books or video courses, and then use this book for systematic study, which will yield better results.
