Editor's review

As a classic textbook in the legal field, Professor Liu Xianquan's Criminal Law (6th Edition) is undoubtedly a staple on the desks of domestic criminal law students. The book is renowned for its comprehensive system, clarity of exposition, and theoretical foresight. The new edition not only fully reflects the latest legislative developments such as Amendment (XI) to the Criminal Law, but also demonstrates the author's consistent independent views and profound thinking on many controversial issues. Compared with similar textbooks, the book's most prominent value lies in its "problem consciousness"—it is not content with simple annotation of legal provisions, but guides readers to deeply understand the principles behind legislation, the dilemmas in judicial practice, and the clashes of doctrinal theories. For example, in traditionally difficult chapters such as joint crime and the forms of multiple crimes, the author's analysis is particularly incisive, combining solid doctrinal review with innovative views grounded in Chinese practice. For readers who wish to truly master criminal law thinking rather than merely memorize knowledge points, this book provides advanced intellectual training. Its content arrangement balances fundamentals and depth, serving both as a reliable guide for beginners to build a knowledge framework and as a reference point for researchers to deepen theoretical understanding. Reading this book is a process of systematically constructing criminal law thinking under the guidance of a top scholar.

Reading tips

  1. It is recommended to first read through the General Part to establish a complete framework of basic criminal law principles and the theory of crime, then proceed to the Specific Part to understand particular offenses.
  2. When reading, keep the original text of the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China at hand for reference, and pay attention to footnotes and case notes to connect theory with practice.
  3. For important theoretical controversies, such as different doctrines on the constitution of crime, readers may combine the book's views with extended reading of other scholars' works to form their own judgment.

FAQ

What are the main differences between the 6th edition and previous editions?
The most important update in the 6th edition is the comprehensive incorporation of the latest legislative developments in criminal law up to the time of publication, especially the content of Amendment (XI) to the Criminal Law. Related theoretical and practical viewpoints have been revised and deepened accordingly, and the structure and exposition of some chapters have also been optimized.
Is this book suitable for complete beginners in law?
The book is rigorous in system and deep in content, posing certain challenges for beginners. However, it is one of the most mainstream criminal law textbooks in China and is very suitable as an introductory textbook. Beginners are advised to read patiently and progressively, supplemented by classroom instruction or basic introductory materials, for better results.
Are the views in this book consistent with the mainstream views of the legal qualification examination?
The book represents one academic perspective, and some of its theoretical views (such as certain propositions on the theory of crime) may differ from the mainstream doctrine adopted in the legal qualification examination. For exam preparation, the book is excellent material for deepening understanding, but candidates should identify and master the mainstream views required by the examination.
