While on leave in his hometown, John meets Savannah. In their brief time together they are drawn to each other and make a promise that belongs only to them. John is a soldier stationed far away, and the long separation can be sustained only by letters. After 9/11 his tour of duty is extended, and longing, waiting, and misunderstanding pile up together until the future that once seemed clear becomes impossible to predict. Just when John believes they will still reunite as promised, he receives the letter Savannah has sent him: in it she writes that she has fallen in love with someone else. John smooths the crumpled letter, folds it again, and carries it with him, like a wound from the battlefield. In the years that follow, amid military service and pain, he returns again and again to that love and reexamines his nearly broken relationship with his taciturn father. When he comes back to North Carolina and faces Savannah once more, he gradually understands that behind the letter lies something he had not seen before. Moving between memory and the present, the novel captures the brightness of meeting and the anguish of separation, and also the weight of letting go: when love cannot continue as togetherness, can blessing and release become a deeper kind of love? Through John and Savannah's story, Sparks places time, distance, duty, and choice inside a romance, inviting readers to rediscover the meaning of love in the midst of sorrow.

《分手信》的原书名是什么?
原书名是 Dear John。英文里“Dear John letter”本就有“给男友的分手信”之意,斯帕克思正是借这层含义,让一个日常称呼成为整部小说最沉重的伏笔。
