Cold Reading

Summary
Cold Reading is the signature work of Hiroshi Ishii, a Japanese psychological counselor and personal motivation expert. Originally published as Why Are Fortune Tellers Trusted?, the Chinese edition was translated by Yue Yizhen and published by CommonWealth. "Cold reading" refers to a set of verbal and psychological techniques that create the illusion that "you really understand me," thereby building trust in an extremely short time. The book points out that fortune tellers, salespeople, and diviners who appear to "see through people" often rely on observing clothing, demeanor, body language, and conversational details, combined with descriptions that sound precise but actually apply to a very wide range of people. Through the Barnum effect and selective memory, they lead the other person to "fill in" the information themselves. The book begins with the psychological mechanisms, explaining why people are easily moved by such statements and why they are willing to trust someone who "understands" them. It then moves into practical techniques, introducing specific methods such as routine topics, negative questions, skillful probing, amplification and reduction talk, and double binds, and explaining how to open a conversation, how to obtain information without offending the other person, and how to let commitments and suggestions take effect naturally. The author emphasizes that the legitimate use of cold reading is not to manipulate or deceive, but to actively understand the other person's intentions and make oneself the kind of person who is "willing to understand others and worthy of trust," so as to get along more smoothly in the workplace, in romance, in friendships, and in family relationships. Concise in length and grounded in everyday examples, the book is well suited as an introductory read on interpersonal communication skills.
Editor's review

FAQ
