Summary

The Cold Moon is the seventh novel in the Lincoln Rhyme series by the American crime writer Jeffery Deaver; its original English title is The Cold Moon. On a full-moon night in December, the night of the "cold moon," a series of killings strikes New York: at each crime scene sits an antique moon-phase clock, along with a card signed "the Watchmaker." Criminalist Lincoln Rhyme, working through the physical evidence, gradually tracks down the clock dealer, only to find that the ten clocks already sold amount to nearly ten death notices; the methods include slashed wrists and immolation, cruel and highly ritualized. Meanwhile his partner, Amelia Sachs, is entangled in another case: the death of a businessman looks like suicide but may lead back to corruption within the police force. As the two threads intertwine, Rhyme for the first time feels deeply at a loss. The addition of behavioral psychologist Kathryn Dance, who works from micro-expressions and body language, brings a new analytical angle to the case. Deaver excels at driving the narrative through chains of physical evidence and logical deduction, with reversals that build layer upon layer and keep overturning the reader's judgments to the very end.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips
