The Return of the Soldier King

The Return of the Soldier King is a long urban action novel by the web author Yun Shisanlang. Its protagonist, Lei Dong, leaves home at seventeen and returns eight years later as an elite special forces veteran. During years of overseas missions under the call sign "Wolf Fang," he has faced off against the Mafia, the Triads, South American drug cartels, and other underworld forces, building a formidable reputation. After completing his final mission, he declines a public security post arranged by his organization and chooses to return to his hometown of Tianhai as an ordinary man, hoping to leave behind a life of bloodshed and keep his family safe. Returning to city life proves anything but easy. To regain a legal identity, he boards an airport shuttle with a forged repatriation document, unkempt and disheveled, and is immediately subjected to contempt from snobbish passengers. When he quietly subdues several pickpockets along the way, he is mistaken for a suspect, and at the police station he is reunited with his former deskmate Zhang Yang, now a police officer. After that, old school friends, street gangs, and the open and covert struggles of entertainment clubs come at him one after another. The novel's main appeal is its "playing the pig to eat the tiger" premise: Lei Dong deliberately hides his edge and poses as a down-and-out vagrant, while in truth his battlefield skills are ready to strike at any moment. The author brings office buildings, flower shops, and entertainment clubs vividly to life, advancing the plot through abundant dialogue and action scenes at a brisk pace—a typical urban soldier-king power fantasy. At over 2.4 million words, the book's main thread follows Lei Dong's reintegration into society, his protection of those around him, and the gradual unraveling of old grudges.
