The Gun of the Soldier

If you're used to post-apocalyptic stories of "one man, one sword, roaming the wasteland," this one offers a different experience. The Gun of the Soldier's biggest draw is that it genuinely writes modern firearms into its combat system: the rate of fire, recoil, and reloading rhythm of sniper rifles, revolvers, and machine guns are all used as narrative elements, with cold and hot weapons competing on the same battlefield—it reads with a hardcore, battlefield texture. Author Fengzhu Cangyun writes with restraint, and the combat scenes emphasize distance and anticipation. The protagonist Ye Mu doesn't rely on mindless cheat powers; he grows step by step from a wilderness hunter into a core fighting force of the fortress city, and the early setup of earning tuition for his brother gives the character grounded roots. At about 1.8 million characters and 631 chapters, the book is moderate in length with tight pacing—suitable for readers who want to finish it in one go and prefer complete settings and a self-consistent world. One caveat: the book was completed in 2012, and its prose and payoff structure bear the clear marks of web fiction from that era; if you prefer the more refined style popular in recent years, you may need a little patience.
