Summary

The Full-Time Servant is a long fantasy novel by the web author Blue-Collar Smiler, formerly serialized on Qidian and now complete, totaling about 1.78 million Chinese characters in more than 580 chapters, and one of the more representative works of the "servant" genre. The story takes place in a world called Shenwu Continent. The protagonist, Yue Xiaoyao, is an orphan picked up and adopted by the head of the Mo family on a journey, raised in the Mo household from childhood in the lowliest role of "inferior servant." Because a servant's duties are so varied, he is called to do odd jobs in nearly every courtyard: the herb garden, the pill room, the forge, the study, the kitchen—wherever hands are short, he is there. Precisely through this life of needing a little of everything, he learns anything with remarkable speed, adept at forging, pill refining, cooking, reading, and general chores, yet remains an inconspicuous little errand boy. The work opens with a lightning strike: Mo Mo, the Mo family's third young master, having taken seriously Xiaoyao's joke that "being struck by lightning makes you smarter," climbs to a high place with an iron rod on a stormy day and is struck, creating a crisis of life and death. Xiaoyao saves him with a first-aid technique that seems unreliable, and from then on is thrust into the sight of the whole Mo household, which also brings to light his secret tutoring and cultivation of the Mo family's young mistress (Guxing). The overall tone is light and humorous: the protagonist regards himself as a "little servant," keeps a low profile, dodges when he can, and habitually pushes trouble and blame onto his young mistress; at the same time he is extremely capable and steady, continuing to learn and hone his many skills while using every means to push the young mistress he raised toward the path of the strong. The "full-time" in the title refers precisely to this all-around odd-job identity: literary and martial, refined and vulgar, he can take on any task and knows a little of everything.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips
