Summary
Global Evolution is a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel by the web author Yao Gou, serialized on Qidian from May 21, 2012, and completed in 2013, totaling about 1.06 million Chinese characters. The novel takes as its premise the "Cambrian explosion," still unresolved in science: more than five hundred million years ago, Earth's single-celled life "out of nowhere" evolved the ancestors of almost all existing species in an extremely short time, completing a dazzling evolutionary explosion at nearly the speed of light; life then returned to a low-speed evolution lasting hundreds of millions of years, and humans climbed to the top of the food chain only by running half a step faster in that long, crawling race. The story pushes this premise into the modern age: a greater "Second Era" suddenly arrives. An eerie red mist shrouds the globe; the propagation of light, signals, and sound is greatly weakened, while the evolution of living things is violently accelerated and turned abnormally frenzied. Liu Chang, a student repeating his final year, witnesses the transformation on the first day of the new term at his boarding school; his parents die to a swarm of mutated rats, his classmates die one after another, and humanity is dragged from the throne of the food chain in a very short time. With the help of his teacher Li Qingshui and others, Liu Chang acquires, through gene transplantation and the manifestation of ancient silent genes, in turn the smell of mammals, the scales and camouflage of reptiles, and the rapid self-healing of coelenterates, growing step by step into a guardian. Yet the opponents are not only mutated beasts: sea people and amphibian people who have given birth to civilization, and the great willow that absorbs human brains to spawn self-awareness and expands madly until it nearly covers the globe, together form competitors beyond humanity. The book closes with multiple species contending for dominion over Earth; the ending is open, leaving a meditation on evolution, civilization, and survival.
Editor's review

Not a good fit for

Reading tips
FAQ
