Summary

All the Love in the World is the first full-length work by author Su Xiaolan (real name Su Shanshan), a semi-autobiographical, semi-fictional "scenario book" first written as comic sketches on a personal blog and later, through Guo Jingming's introduction, serialized from 2007 in the "Wind and Wood" column of the magazine Zui Novel. A standalone volume was published by Changjiang Literature and Art Publishing House in June 2008. The book strings together more than seventy independent short stories, with protagonists "Xiaolan" and "Mumu," a post-80s young couple modeled on the author and her husband. From first meeting, courtship, meeting the parents, and proposal to marriage, their journey is trivial yet lively: odd habits from acting out scenes, fights over soccer versus TV dramas, jokes caused by Mandarin and dialects, the ordeal of wedding photos, Valentine's Day reflections, wrangling over household finances, and small frictions on buses and in appliance stores... In the daily grind of oil, salt, firewood, and rice there are both quarrels and laughter. The writing is true to life, with short paragraphs and a brisk pace, few ornate flourishes; reading it feels like watching a two-person sitcom. During its serialization in Zui Novel it ranked second only to Tiny Times in reader votes, making Su Xiaolan one of the most talked-about young writers of the year. Sequels followed, with All the Love in the World II: Four Years of Silk Marriage and All the Love in the World III: A Tiger Cub at Home continuing the same couple's daily life.

Editor's review

FAQ
