Illuminati Volume 2

Illuminati is a Marvel Comics storyline featuring the secret organization of the same name. This organization is secretly formed by the smartest and most powerful superheroes on Earth, including Mister Fantastic, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, Namor, and later Beast, who succeeds Professor X. They do not appear publicly, convening secretly only when a major crisis threatening Earth or the entire multiverse is discovered, acting on the principle of "a smaller sacrifice to avoid a greater one." For this reason, most of the organization's decisions carry moral ambiguity and often backfire: they once exiled the Hulk into space, and on the eve of the Secret Invasion they broke into the Skrull homeworld; both actions later provoked severe backlash. In the New Avengers era written by Hickman, the Illuminati face the multiversal "incursion" crisis: when the Earths of two universes are about to collide, if no one acts, both universes will be destroyed; to save their own universe, extreme choices must be made. This set of stories pushes the team's secrecy, calculation and internal fractures to the extreme and directly sets up the Secret Wars event.
