The Light Brigade is a four-issue miniseries released by DC Comics in 2004 and collected as a single volume in late 2005, written by Peter J. Tomasi and drawn by Peter Snejbjerg. The story takes place on the European battlefront at the end of World War II: in the winter of 1944, around the Ardennes Forest in Belgium, Allied soldiers face the German army amid snow and dense woods in freezing cold. The protagonist, American soldier Chris Stavros, has just learned that his wife back in the United States has died in an accident; desperate to return home to care for his young son, he is trapped in the ice and snow by the war. On one patrol, he and his comrades discover two archangels fighting over a stolen "Sword of God," and one of them, Sauriel, promises that if he recovers the sword, he will be reunited with his wife and child. So this group of ordinary soldiers forms the "Light Brigade," and their mission shifts from stopping the German army to a sacred march where light and darkness intertwine. Realistic war writing blends here with angels and demons and fantasy elements, and the fourth issue brings the whole to a close. This volume is the first of the series, the opening portion of that four-issue story.
